Polyphenon E® has shown promise in the treatment of certain types of cancer, infectious disease, and neurological and urologic disorders. Oral and topical delivery systems for Polyphenon E have already been developed, and the Company is exploring delivery through intravenous infusion, bladder infusion, inhalation and other routes of administration.

Polyphenon E is the active ingredient in the FDA approved product Veregen®, which MediGene AG and Bradley Pharmaceuticals are marketing as a topical treatment for external and perianal genital warts. FDA approval of Veregen, the first for a complex botanical in many years, follows two successful Phase III clinical trials in Europe and the Americas involving more than 1,000 patients.

Polyphenon E is now being evaluated as an oral treatment for chronic lymphocytic leukemia in a study at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and as an oral treatment for the prevention of prostate cancer in high risk subjects in a study at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Tampa, Florida. The Company is also sponsoring preclinical studies of Polyphenon E in other areas including superficial bladder cancer.

Mouse over condition for definition:
External Genital and Perianal WartsExternal genital and perianal warts are one of the most common venereal diseases worldwide.  Approximately 14 million people in the United States and 15 million people in Europe are infected by human papilloma viruses (HPV type 6 or 11) giving rise to external genital warts.
Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL)A type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow — the spongy tissue inside bones where blood cells are made – that progresses more slowly than acute leukemia. It affects a group of white blood cells called lymphocytes, which typically fight infection. Each year, about 10,000 people in the United States receive a diagnosis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
High-grade Prostatic Intraepithelial Neoplasia (HG-PIN)The main pre-malignant lesion that is closely associated with progression to a diagnosis of prostate cancer.
Prostate CancerA type of cancer that affects the (seminal-producing) prostate gland in men. It is the most common cancer (aside from skin cancer) found in American men. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 218,890 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2007.
Superficial Bladder CancerA type of bladder cancer that affects the inner lining of the bladder and has not yet invaded the muscle. Current treatment consists of surgical removal of the cancerous cells through transurethral resection (TUR). There is a high rate of recurrence following TUR, which has been addressed through the instillation of chemopreventative agents into the bladder in order to lower the rate of recurrence.
