Welcome to Polyphenon Pharma, an emerging research-based pharmaceutical company focused on developing its lead compound Polyphenon E®, with broad potential in multiple therapeutic markets in the United States and worldwide. We believe Polyphenon E has the potential to address significant unmet medical needs in the areas of infectious disease/virology, urology, neurology, and oncology.
The highly characterized catechins in Polyphenon E are extracted from green tea leaves through a proprietary process. Both oral and topical forms of Polyphenon E have been developed and Polyphenon Pharma intends to formulate Polyphenon E for other delivery systems including intravenous transfusion, bladder instillation, inhaler and other devices.
In October 2006 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the dermatological product Veregen®, in which Polyphenon E is the active ingredient, for the treatment of HPV
derived
genital warts.External genital and perianal warts are one of the most common venereal diseases worldwide. Approximately 14 million people in the United States and 15 million people in Europe are infected by human papilloma viruses (HPV type 6 or 11) giving rise to external genital warts.
Regulatory approval of Veregen was based on two successful Phase III clinical trials in Europe and the Americas involving more than 1,000 patients.
Doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota are currently conducting a clinical trial of Polyphenon E as an oral treatment for chronic lymphocytic leukemiaA type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow — the spongy tissue inside bones where blood cells are made – that progresses more slowly than acute leukemia. It affects a group of white blood cells called lymphocytes, which typically fight infection. Each year, about 10,000 people in the United States receive a diagnosis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
. A clinical trial at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa, Florida will test the efficacy of oral Polyphenon E to delay or eliminate the progression of HGPIN (high grade intraepithelial neoplasia)
to treat prostate cancerA type of cancer that affects the (seminal-producing) prostate gland in men. It is the most common cancer (aside from skin cancer) found in American men. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 218,890 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2007.
in a high risk population; this study is funded by the National Cancer Institute. Polyphenon Pharma
is also sponsoring early preclinical work in other disease
states: instillation treatment for superficial bladder cancerA type of bladder cancer that affects the inner lining of the bladder and has not yet invaded the muscle. Current treatment consists of surgical removal of the cancerous cells through transurethral resection (TUR). There is a high rate of recurrence following TUR, which has been addressed through the instillation of chemopreventative agents into the bladder in order to lower the rate of recurrenc
and oral treatment to reduce painful crisis in sickle cell anemia.
In addition to these opportunities, there are more than a dozen studies throughout North America, in which Polyphenon E’s therapeutic potential is tested against a broad range of diseases including lung cancer, breast cancer, Barrett’s Esophagus and multiple sclerosis. Research centers participating in these studies include Columbia University Medical School, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, the University of Arizona, and the British Columbia Cancer Agency.
At Polyphenon Pharma, we are committed to defining the therapeutic benefits of Polyphenon E in a number of serious and chronic diseases. We invite you to learn more about Polyphenon Pharma – our mission, activities, pipeline and people. Thank you for visiting our website.
